Paint Party Friday - Week 4 - Coffee Painting #3

Slow progress this week, but progress! I started the week off well - painting a self-portrait on a new Sketchbook cover and sketching out an idea for the third of my "coffee" paintings. I started the painting, doing the background. And there it sat. I wasn't sure I'd get much further but knowing it was almost time for Paint Party Friday check-in spurred me on! (Yay - it's working!) Here is my new little painting:

Espresso for Two
(6x6 Acrylics)

I had a hard time with this - especially with the shadows and outline definition. Not sure if it is done or if I will try to improve it.

So please have a cup of espresso while you're here during the party!

I have a question - what do you do with excess paint? I hesitate to always throw it out or wash it away. So this is what I've been doing lately (still a WIP).

I'm looking forward to visiting you all! And tonight, some of my girlfriends and I are going to get out the paints, canvases, brushes (and the wine!) and take Paint Party Friday LIVE!!

  1. lovely flowers and espresso art.
Lately I have been putting my extra bits of paint on other papers to use as background. But I plan to do something Lynne Hoppe did on her blog, which is put it on muslin fabric and then make an art journal out of it.

  2. I just love your coffee series! This one is a great addition. My extra bits of paint usually go onto blank journal pages as backgrounds. I have lots of scraps of watercolor paper and I also use the paint on those for future collage pages.

  3. Eva, I think that's a great idea on the leftover paint. Yes I will have a cup of espresso, don't mind if I do. Tee Hee. I don't think it needs any more. I like the loose look of it. The coffee looks as though someone just poured it and it's still moving around. Great job.

  4. Well done ... so diligent to your painting! The coffee series is coming along nicely.

    For leftover acrylic paint:

If I remember it correctly from Nancy Reyner's book on Acrylic, you could make "Acrylic Plastic Sheet" (for collage, mixed media type artwork)

    - Allow the acrylic to dry thoroughly
    - Roll them out
    - Glue them onto mixed media artwork or experiment with other kind of surfaces.

You could find a link of the book from one of my blgo post (below)

    Hope this helps. Cheers!

  5. Oh, I can smell the espresso! :) I usualy put the paint back in the bottle cause I don't want to waste it too much. But still some gets wasted.

  6. Great idea for the excess paint. I never though of it as usually i use watercolour so there is no excess as such. With oils i covered my palette with cling film (ceran wrap?) last week to try to stop the paint drying out! Don't know if it worked yet! I like the colours in your expresso painting very much.

  7. If there is a lot of acrylic leftover...put saran on it and stick it in the fridge...you'll get one more use out of it....I've been trying to squeeze out the smallest dollops I can manage...haha!

I love this wonderful coffee painting! Makes me want to brew a cup right now :)

  8. Loving the coffee painting! I have a very hard time with shadows and light for some reason. I think you did a great job. Makes me want some coffee!

  9. Well ¡¡¡¡¡¡ accept that cup of coffee, is that the whiff that emerges is irresistible. Going very well this series of cafes, it seems a good idea to recycle the excess paint making another one. Hugs

  10. Love the coffee painting....I use mostly watercolor, colored pencil or pastel so I don't have that problem. Occasionally I will use acrylic or oil and I just toss it out.

  11. Love the coffee series. Excess paint is a problem so I just try to use as little as I think I will need. Up until now I just threw it out but the ideas here are great and I will use some of them in the future.

  12. Beautiful coffee painting. I have yet to try acrylics out properly, but when I have some left over from my daubings I swoosh them on my craft map and get great backings from them to use in my Art Journal. Have a great weekend, Annette x

  13. Love the coffee painting. You need to get yourself a stay-wet palette. I use mine all the time. It is similar to a flat tupperware container and has a thin sponge inside on which you place special paper. You dampen the sponge and the paper before you put your paint on it. I can keep my paint fresh for a week this way. You can buy them at craft stores, art supply stores or online. The papers come in large packs of 25. :-)

  14. excess paint? depends on how much I hve left. I use watercolors mostly so I can just spritz it down and use it again. If I am dyeing fabric then I pour the left overs across wet fabric hanging on a clothesline and watch the magic begin as it all blends together.

  18. Yay! It's working!!! (You're developing a signature swirl for your steam - very chic!)

Your live painting party sounds like soooo much fun! Enjoy!

p.s. When I'm using artists acrylics I try to squeeze out as little as possible, when I use liquid acrylics I use leftovers to create collage papers and backgrounds, and when I use house paints I mix them in cups and save them in plastic water bottles.

  21. Whenever I come to your blog I have to chuckle about the little robin and his yellow boots. He just puts me into a good mood.
Since I'm a coffee lover, your coffee series works its magic with me. I can almsot smell the wonderful scent of freshly brewed coffee - aaahh.

  22. I usually brayer spare paint onto a blank page in my sketchbook and use it for background sometimes.

Another thing I tend to do is trail my sleeve in it then end up trailing it all over places it shouldn't be! (but that's not intentional!!)

  23. Yay, more coffee paintings. You are making want to paint cups, which I haven't done in a while. I do like your series. I keep paper, torn out book pages, ect. next to my desk and if I have extra paint I smear it around on those. It always comes in handy for something, eventually.

  24. I'd love to sip some espresso, thanks! I like the squarish cups and rectangular plate.

I don't have a good answer to your excess paint question, but I really like your idea.

Hope your wine and painting is lots of fun tonight!

  28. Yes it's great to have paper to lay down extra paint on to use for backgrounds for future paintings or have another painting going!
    Cool!

  29. Yay, Live Painting Party! Very fun =) I think your Espresso For Two looks finished, and very cute! Sometimes I throw out my excess acrylic paint...but if there's alot I grab an ACEO blank and do a spontaneous little painting with it. I do like all of the other ideas presented here, and will be looking for some scrap paper and fabric to paint on ;) Kathryn

  30. great painting! I put my regular acrylic on Styrofoam plates, then put them inside a plastic container or Ziploc bag with a wet paper towel under the plate to keep them moist. My Interactives I keep on a Sta-Wet palette. But when I'm done with something and know I wont use that paint before it does dry up I just paint it out on a canvas to use as a background in the future.

  31. Aside from covering my face and arms and clothing with it besides the actual painting I was keeping the excess paint under wrap for later use; at the rate I use it I need every drop...haha! I like the coffee cup series.
Your idea of the Posie cover is great!Must remember that!

  36. Thank you for the expresso! Mind you it may be cold with me getting here so late: lol (been busy with TIC TOCC stuff and school hols).

I love the colours you used in your coffee painting - reminds me of coffee (obviously) caramel and biscuits. I skipped lunch and this is making me want all of them :-)

I hate to throw excess paint and so I do one or more of the following: start a new journal background, paint background/collage papers, paint my wood shapes that I make into various embellishments, let the kids play. I like how you used your extra paint - pretty flowers!
