Paint Party Friday - Week 28 - Starting a Sea Star

I have been wanting to paint a painting of a sea star to hang in my bathroom for ages and have procrastinated like nobody's business! (Isn't that a bizarre expression.) I finally convinced myself to start this week. Do you ever do that?

It is still very much a work-in-progress but there is a canvas and it has paint on it! Here are a few shots so far:

The background - which resembles my floor tiles a bit.

The shadows
(What colour do you paint shadows?)

A first coat - not quite right

A second coat and start of texture but it needs to dry more...

Silly, quick, playing-around-with-leftover-paint-in-sketchbook Sea Star

Well, lots more work to do! How was your week? Hope it was productive for painting!

Have a great time at Paint Party Friday!

  1. yep. i'm a big 'leftover' girl too. once i'm done with the 'big work', i use up all of my excess junk in a little book.

because i guess it would kill me to just clean my palette.

  3. Well Done with your start fish! Enjoying the texture. For shadow color, I tend to use cool tonse like ultramarine blue, purple, all sorts of grey etc but to avoid black and brown.

    Hope this helps! ;)

  21. Your quick sketch doesn't look like a quick sketch at all. I love it!

  24. Thank you for co-hosting PPF!
I totally looked forward to it again this week!

Love how you show the progression of your star painting through photos!

For my shadows, I usually mix complements together. For example, if it is a shadow on green grass, I add some red to the green. Works pretty well for me!

Love how we both have the word "Sea" in our painting titles this week, too! Woo-hoo!
    TGIF!

  25. Great work so far! I'm such a procrastinator. I love that you just went in and did it. I would still be at the thinking stage. Your "quick sketch" is wonderful! :)

  26. Getting started is the biggest hurdle. Soon you'll have it hanging in the bathroom and will be wondering why in the world you took so long to do it. :) Or is that just me?

  27. I agree that is a strange expression :)

I'm loving the colors you're using - I can't wait to see it finished!

  31. Eva, your work is an inspiration. Yes I have the same feeling as you and sometimes I have to convince myself to work on it today.. it is all about committing. One of my goal is to be able to paint on canvas.. I am excited to see your finish work.. it's definitely a great start. For shadows in watercolor, I use any blue + black or blue + those umber browns.

  32. I love being able to see the process other artists go by- I work in a similar way building layers and layers until it feels complete. And how wonderful to have your own sea star to enjoy each day in your home!

  36. I am a BIG procrastinator when it comes to making art or other creative things for my own home. Isn't that what they say about a plumber? That his own pipes are always clogged? That might be a bit of a strane expression too...:)
