... exploring in my creativity further in 2022

Paint Party Friday - Year 2, Week 1 - Trying an Abstract

Year 2 of Painting regularly! Still hard to believe at times.... It is so much fun to share the painting experience with all of you at Paint Party Friday! It definitely helps to keep me painting.

One of the things I often admire are abstracts. They look so easy and yet for me to create, seem so challenging! So this week I bought a few canvas boards to just try and play around with creating an abstract painting. Of the three I started, this one feels finished to me:

Abstract #1 by EVA

I even like it sitting in my living room. A black frame might go nicely...

I also did some more work on a WIP I started earlier this year. This is where I left it:

WIP - Feb2012

This is where I am now:

Wheat Fields - WIP?

Is it finished? I am not sure and could use your advice. (What amazing advice I have had from everyone on previous occasions. Thanks again!)

I printed out several photocopies and started playing with ideas. What do you think of its future? As is? Or with one of the following variations?

With birds?  (I think I am leaning towards these.)
Or hills?
Or both?

With pine trees?

With deciduous trees?

With a cabin?

Or something else? I'd love your advice and feedback! Thanks!

Hope you have a great time at PPF and had fun painting this week!

  1. I love the abstract, colors and motion. And your WIP... I think adding some birds and maybe a small hill? A few birds over a wheat field would be enough. It reminds me of driving through the Palouse in Eastern Washington.
Oh, and how clever to make copies to try out different ideas.
Happy PPF! Thanks for continuing the party. :)

  2. Eva!! I think your forte is abstract art! It's absolutely beautiful and I love the black frame with it. The WIP is coming along nicely. I agree with you that it needs a focal point. Any of those ideas would be great, maybe all three? Can't wait to see how you finish it. Happy PPF! :-)

  3. Very nice Eva! I've never thought about trying abstract.
Love your thoughts on your WIP so far. I'm thinking a large moon and maybe a branchy tree?

  4. Eva, your abstract is great! It is really hard to do a good abstract. I think i like you WIP with birds and hills..maybe a cabin, too?

  5. Well done with trying so many options ... like the cabin, feels like a story coming up. Wonderful!

  6. I love your abstract! At first, when I looked at it I saw spiders....
You WIP is looking good. For me, personally, I would add the cabin and some birds.
    Happy PPF.

  7. Loving your abstract, it has an oriental look, well it does to me....but thats the beauty of abstract isn't it, we all see different things. Your WIP is looking good and hope you find your solution. Happy PPF and have a great weekend, Annette x

  8. Hello Eva, I would see bare branched trees, it's what I love doing, black and bare. There are so many possibilities, it's what feels most right for you, sometimes you just need to leave it and then you have a vision and see something that would fit well in the picture. I love your colours, the country feel, black birds flying in the sky too. Have fun with it and happy PPF!

  10. Abstracts are tough for me too! I love your color choices and the way yours wraps around itself! I vote for birds on the painting!

  11. Love the abstract! It reminds me of drifting blossoms and dragonflies. Your black brushstrokes are very confident, it gives the whole painting an Asian feel to me.

As for the second one, I like the hills and birds.

  12. I love your abstract. It makes me think of wild flowers and prairies (not that i've ever been on a prairie but I watch a lot of tv!)
I like your second one with the addition of the birds. Such a lot of ideas you've come up with

  15. Good work! I, too am trying abstract these days and find it very challenging, but also very fun. One teacher I worked with talked about always having a focal point, and a part that gives your eye a place to rest. That's been very helpful to me. I like how you experiment with different options for your paintings. That's a cool idea. The birds with some trees look good to me.

  16. I love your abstract with the black frame! What a cool idea. (I imagine you played with the finishes (frame - adding elements to your wip) in a photo program but I'm a bit ignorant when it comes to those). I think your WIP needs a bit more and you must be feeling the same way or you wouldn't be trying to finish it. :) I love everything you've added to it and think any of them would work very well.

  17. Glad you tried abstraction again! This painting actually reminds me of bees swarming a hive! Love the energy of it!

In your second painting, I do think birds and trees would enhance the progress you've made so far. It reminds me of van Gogh's wheat field painting. :)

  22. hah! LOVE the abstract, and what a fun way of plotting out your new creation!! I've got to try that sometime, make lots of copies with different options - I say, what would happen if you put them ALL in?

  23. Abstraction is difficult for me, but I like when another artist adventure.
Your work in progress would be either with birds and a bright sky.
I hope to see it finished at the back of my trip. Saludos and hugs

  26. Wow I love abstracts and yes they are difficult because you are being so random yet you get all the power to choose what happens and how much

I actually love the very first photo of the painting with the orange-ish sky and gold/yellow-ish hill and the swath of orange in the hillside
That is perfection of simple abstract art to me
    ...nothing else needed
Just my two cents and simplistic love of simplicity

  27. Hi, love the abstract... I like the the one with the flock of birds... I also love to see poppies in fields of wheat..just that splash of red which never fails to give me a warm nostalgic feeling..:)

  28. Oh, I love your abstracts! :) They look like spiders. :)

  29. Love the first one! It looks like birds flying. :))

    1. advice: never put the horizon in the center of the painting. YOu can continue to put more stuff in to hide it but it's still going to be there.

      make things uneven, almost random.

      have fun!

  34. Great idea! I do it too to use as an underpainting!
Your abstract reminds me of lovely japanese brush painting!!

  35. Abstracts are so hard! As easy as they look...
I like the one you made, it looks soft but hard, very contrasting.
And I always enjoy looking at your wips :o)

  36. Hi Eva,
Luv your abstract and the black frame suits it perfectly.
For your wip I think small hills and the flock of birds would look beautiful in the landscape , anyway I think experimenting this way with Ps makes it fun and interesting before finishing a project.Good luck ; )

  37. LOVE the abstract piece- it's FAB! And for your wheat field; what about a morning star or two or even three- make pre-dawn-ish?
    Just some thoughts :D

  38. If it was mine, I'd put flowers in the foreground, but i'm a flower person ! Love colors! I'd make the field a background, and put a tree in front, that's another possibility. Patsy from

  42. I'm not normally a fan of abstract work, but I like your work here a lot. It looks very much like an Japanese ink drawing and the marks are almost spider-like, very graceful.

  43. I love your abstract. I, too, have such a terrible time having something "come together" and look finished. And for your other WIP, I personally love the cabin and the birds, too, flying over head. Just my 2 cents. : ) I have a thing for cabins! Thanks so much for hosting PPF. I have so enjoyed it. Anything that keeps me "arting" is good. You should definitely go and check out the Book of Days again - there is no pressure to "keep up". You can do one day a month if that is what you can manage. Many people are traveling at vastly different rates.

    God bless!

  46. Beautiful! I don't know why, but I want to look at the painting again and again... I can't tell what it is, but it's fascinating!

  47. You did great on your abstract. I have yet to try one. With your WIP, I like all your ideas. Its fun to try out the possibilities, but if you were painting my current home state, it would be fairly easy - just plain old' wheat fields. Nothing else, but they would need to be swaying in the wind. :) I can't wait to see how it turns out.

  48. Thanks for your lovely comment on my blog Eva! I love your venture into abstract and I agree that these are probably the hardest kind of paintings to do. Your wheat fields painting is gorgeous, I like the way you've tried your ideas on the photocopies and my favourite is with the suggestion of hills in the distance and a few birds. :)

    ReplyDelete
  49. I love this idea! So fun to read what suggestions others have too! I agree with the group: your abstract is beautiful! I love the black and gold and agree with Peggy in that it reminds me of brush painting.
As far as your question: they all look great, but I like seeing your ideas outlined like that - and personally, I am drawn to the hills with birds ;)

  50. I love abstracts too! It's funny. I am often painting whimsical portraits of girls, but prefer abstract to hang in my home. :) I have been trying that style too and it is a lot harder than it looks right!? You have done beautifully. I hope we get to see some more!!

  51. Lovely idea to gather suggestions! Like the abstract, too! Valerie

  52. What fun with abstracts. Yes, I think no.1 looks good with a frame, it grounds the painting. I prefer the birds and trees.
    Thanks for visiting my blog.

  53. I love your abstract painting...I see spiders in there but then I see dandelion heads too. Amazing what the eye tricks you into seeing and everyones interpretation will be different which is the beauty of abstract :)
I like the idea of the birds in you WIP it is so cool
